Mark and Jens last Sunday ...

How many of you agree that Mark and Jen have finished well? ~

How many of you know that this is not the end of their journey ~

Of course not ~ This is simply the start of a new adventure in their journey with God … A Journey that He expects them to finish well.

He has that expectation for all of us too.

Lets look at a man in the Bible who finished well… A Man w ho passed on the baton well to his son in the Faith …

Paul’s final words to Timothy …

2 Timothy 4: 1-8

“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you (Timothy) this charge: " "Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction."

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear."

They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

"But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry."

6-8 "For I am already being poured out like a drink offering and the time for my departure has come.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. "

"Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

I would like to focus on verses 6 - 8 for a while ….

"For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,"

? What was Paul speaking about - What does it mean to be poured out like a drink offering ?

A drink offering in the OT was a freewill offering of wine poured out on the alter - it released a sweet aroma and was symbolic of me saying “I gladly give all I have, I give my life to you Lord”.

By speaking of his death as a “drink offering,” Paul was saying to Timothy,

“When you hear of my death, don’t think that Nero has executed me against my will.
All I had to do to save my life was to deny Christ.

No I gladly lay down my life. Nero cannot take my life; I gladly offer it to my Lord and Savior.

My own blood will be like the wine of the drink offering, gladly given to the One who loved me and gave himself for me.”

It was Paul’s way of saying, “Don’t weep for me, Timothy. When I die ~ I die smiling ~ I have already given everything to Jesus. The only thing left to give is my life and tI gladly do so.

Paul then goes on to say in v 6 ….. “for the time of my departure has come.”

The word “departure” here refers to a ship hoisting it’s anchor, raising it’s sails and leaving the harbour after a long journey and sailing home

Paul was going home ~ Going home to the one He loved ~ To the one He had given His life to from the day he met Christ 40 years earlier on the Road to Damascus.

Paul spoke of this in 2 Corinthians 4: 7 ~ 18 "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. 13 It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak,

14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.. v 16 ….

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Paul then goes on to say ~ 2 Timothy 4 : 7 “I have fought the good fight ~ I have finished the race ~ I have kept the faith”

Church we need to remember …

That we are in a fight But we must fight the right fight ~ The good fight ~ “The fight of Faith”.

And finally that we do not fight alone or in our own strength for the battle is not ours but the Lords.

Ephesians 6 : 10 - 12 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms

2 Corinthians 10:4 (kjv) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds

  1. That we must finish and finish well …

Finishing well doesn’t happen by accident. It takes determination, discipline and perseverance and a realization that we will face struggles ~ trains and tribulations along the way.

The sad reality is that : Many start well but not all will finish well.

1 Peter 1:6-9 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Church if we understand that we are in a battle: That are all called to fight the good fight ~ we will not be discouraged when trials come our way.

Being forewarned is being forearmed and we will understand where it is coming from and we wont beat up on ourselves …

2 Timothy 4:8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

Finally Paul lived with eternity in his heart:

Paul understood that his reward would an eternal reward a personal reward and that it would far outweigh anything this world had to offer ..

Paul was not afraid to die? He had run his race well ~ He had finished his race and He had NO REGRETS ~ He was ready to go home ….

My prayer for us is that we can say the same ..

Acts 13: 36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep”

Church could we be a people like this - ones who stay the course no matter what - ones who finished Our Race well ... Both individually and corporately....
