Thursday, October 22 & Friday, October 23 · 7–9 PM Departure Bay Baptist Church, 3510 Departure Bay Rd If you lead or serve at Oceanside, these two evenings are for you. We're setting aside time this October to learn together what it means to lead in step with the Holy Spirit. Ken Grenfell is joining us again from Virginia. He's been a familiar face in our church for the last 20 years, and he's known for his prophetic gifting. He brings both a deep understanding of the Holy Spirit's work and a lived example of it. Our leaders come from many different backgrounds and church experiences, and that's a gift. For these two nights, we'll open God's Word together, stay open to what the Spirit is doing, and ask Him for more of His gifts at work when we gather. Each evening will include teaching, time for your questions, practical examples, and a time of ministry together. We'd love to see you at both nights. Everyone is welcome to join us.

You weren't meant to follow Jesus alone.

September has been a month of new starts around here. A few things launched, and each one is a different door into the same thing: following Jesus alongside other people. It's possible to attend church for years and never really be known. We don't want that for you. We believe the best environment for spiritual growth is authentic relationships, and relationships don't happen by accident. Someone has to open a door, and someone has to walk through it. So here's a look back at what happened this month, and a few ways to step in. The students kicked things off. On Friday, September 18th, high schoolers gathered at The Junction for our Youth Kick Off Party. There was pizza and there were obstacle courses. Students met their youth leaders and heard the vision for the year. The invitation was the same for returning students and brand new ones: come, and bring your friends. That's usually how community starts. Someone says there's a place for you, and you show up.Attend Ocean Youth Then Soul Nights began. The next night, Saturday, September 19th, we held the first Soul Nights, our new ministry for single adults in their 20s and 30s. By single, we mean not married. Dating, engaged, divorced, widowed, or anywhere in between. Wherever you are, you're welcome. That first night was about spending time together, getting to know one another, and sharing the vision for this community. And the vision is simple: the goal isn't marriage. The goal is Jesus. Singleness isn't a waiting room. It's a gift, and a meaningful way to live for Christ. Discipleship Groups are open for sign-ups. Discipleship Groups launched this month, and sign-ups are open now. Groups meet throughout the week in homes across Nanaimo. You read Scripture, pray, and have honest conversations. Some nights you dig deep into the Bible. Some nights you spend half the evening talking through what life threw at you that week. Both matter. You don't need to know the Bible inside and out. You don't need the right answers. Expect conversations rather than lectures, prayer rather than pressure, friendship rather than pretending. Probably some coffee, too. If you've been waiting for a good moment to join one, this is it.Find a Discipleship Group Serving is a way in, too. Most of what happens at Oceanside runs on volunteers. Someone sets up the chairs. Someone makes the coffee. Someone plays drums. Someone helps a kid finish their craft. Every one of those jobs matters, and so does every person doing them. I've been serving on a team for 10 years, and it's given me opportunities I never would have had otherwise. I got to play on a worship team in Chicago for the Equip. I've met a lot of like-minded friends along the way. Maybe you've been coming on Sundays and you're not sure how to go deeper. Serving is one of the best ways to get to know people. On a team, you're not just sitting near someone for an hour. You're working toward something together, and that's where friendships have room to grow. You don't need to have it all figured out. Whether you're drawn to chairs, coffee, drums, or crafts, we'd love for you to join a team, and we'll help you find where you fit.Join a Team Your next step. Everyone has a next step. Soul Nights - our new singles ministry launches September 19th

If you’re single and in your 20s or 30s, we want you to know that you’re invited to Soul Nights. By single, we mean not married; whether you’re dating, engaged, divorced, widowed, or anywhere in between. Wherever you find yourself, you’re welcome. Soul Nights is a new space for single adults in our church to grow, become more like Jesus, and faithfully live out the season God has given us. Soul Nights: the soul meeting its Maker You might be wondering about the name. Soul is at the heart of what this community is about: the soul meeting its Maker, being rooted and united in Christ, and learning to praise and delight in the Lord. At the centre of it all is you and your soul’s relationship with God. We believe that the goal isn’t marriage. The goal is Jesus. Our hope is to build a community where we can know Christ more deeply, grow in spiritual maturity, find joy and contentment in the present season, discover God’s purpose for our lives, and generously serve His kingdom. This isn’t simply a space to talk about dating or marriage. It’s a space to be formed by Jesus, rooted in Him, and equipped to live fully for Him; whatever season we’re in. And if you meet your future spouse along the way, we’ll celebrate with you! But if God calls you to a lifetime of singleness, we’ll celebrate that too. Singleness is not a waiting room; it is a gift and a meaningful way to live for Christ. First soul night launches Saturday September 19th at 6pm at The Junction We’d love for you to join us for our first Soul Nights gathering, where we’ll spend time together, get to know one another, and share the vision for this community. We want to begin building a space where single adults can grow, flourish, and thrive together in Christ. Recap: ONE80 Volunteers had an EPIC Launch Night on Saturday!

Our Children’s Ministry Volunteer Launch was a night of rock-n-roll, connection, and celebration! With a fun 1950s theme, a Sundae bar and delicious burgers, and a hula-hoop competition, we had a great time honouring our volunteers, enjoying one another and building community. But beyond the food, fun, and retro vibes, the core of the evening was about God’s heart for this next generation. We are so grateful for the incredible privilege and responsibility of supporting children to meet face to face with Jesus. We took time to connect, pray together, and share vision for the year ahead. It was an opportunity to strengthen relationships, encourage one another, and build an even deeper bond across our volunteer teams. We’re so grateful for each person who serves our children and families. What a JOY to look ahead together and believe for an incredible year in ONE80 Kids!!!

Dads & Lads: A Night Under the Stars

This past weekend, our dads and lads headed out to The Junction for a night of campfires, games, and good old-fashioned fun. There were smokies and s'mores around the fire, pancakes in the morning, and a game of lights and lanterns played out in the dark on Holland Field next door — lads darting through the field while the dads did their best to fend off the swarms coming at them from every direction. A late-night rain shower snuck in and left more than a few guys slipping into soggy shoes the next morning, but it didn't put a damper on the weekend. Lads from every age group hung out together like old friends, and the dads got a night to just be present with their sons. Nights like this are what Dads & Lads is all about — dads and their boys, unplugged, making memories that'll get retold around campfires for years to come. Want in on the next one? Jesus & Jammies: A First for Our ONE80 Girls

Last Thursday, 24 girls from grades 4 through 7 showed up to The Junction in their comfiest pajamas for something we'd never done before — our first ever Jesus and Jammies night. 💅 It had all the makings of a classic girls' night: painted nails, cozy blankets, and plenty of laughter. But underneath the fun, something deeper was happening. These girls spent the evening being reminded of a simple truth — they are carriers of God's presence. As they head into a new school year, we wanted them to walk away knowing that Jesus doesn't just meet them on a Thursday night at church. He lives in them, every day, everywhere they go. The girls took time to journal and were prayed for individually, creating space for real, personal connection with the Lord. For many of them, it was a quiet and meaningful moment in the middle of a night full of noise and giggles — the kind of moment that sticks with you. We're so grateful for every girl who came in her jammies ready to be known, encouraged, and prayed over. Our hope is that this is a night they carry with them well beyond the start of this school year — a reminder, whenever they need it, that God's presence goes wherever they go.
